You have found a small pile of debris on a windowsill, under a door frame or beside a baseboard. It looks a bit like sawdust, a bit like sand, and you are fairly sure nobody has been cutting wood in the house.
The obvious worry is termites. Most guides you will find online agree, because most of them are written for Florida and California.
For a Toronto home, the answer is usually different — and knowing why saves you from calling the wrong company for the wrong problem.

What Is Termite Frass?
Frass is the waste insects produce after digesting wood. In termites it is the by-product of breaking down cellulose, the structural fibre that makes up wood.
Not every termite deals with that waste the same way, and this is where most confusion begins.
Drywood termites:
Drywood termites live entirely inside the wood they eat. They have no use for their waste, so they chew tiny openings called kick-out holes and push it out, leaving pellets below.
Subterranean termites:
Subterranean termites live in soil and use their waste as a building material. It gets mixed with soil and saliva to construct tunnels rather than discarded.
That single difference determines whether you will ever see frass in your home. It also determines whether frass is a useful clue in Ontario at all.
What Does Termite Frass Look Like?
When people describe termite frass, they are describing drywood termite pellets. These are distinctive enough to identify with a magnifying glass.
Size and shape
Individual pellets are roughly one millimetre long — slightly larger than a grain of sand. Each one is an oval capsule with rounded ends.
The defining feature is the sides. A drywood termite pellet has six flattened, slightly concave faces running lengthwise, which gives the whole pile a granular, uniform look.
That uniformity is the giveaway. Every pellet in a pile looks like every other pellet, because they were all formed the same way by the same process.
Colour and texture
Colour depends on the wood being eaten, ranging from pale tan through to dark brown or nearly black. Pellets from a single colony are usually a consistent shade.
Fresh frass looks slightly darker and may feel faintly damp. Dry termite frass — older material — turns dusty and pale, and crumbles more easily.
Texture is hard and gritty rather than soft or fibrous. Rolled between your fingers, the pellets stay intact rather than flattening into shavings.
How it appears in a room
Because it is pushed out through small openings, drywood frass accumulates in small cone-shaped mounds directly below the kick-out hole.
The holes themselves are circular and roughly one to two millimetres across. Finding a neat pile of pellets underneath a pinhole in timber is close to conclusive.
Critically, the pile contains nothing else. No wood splinters, no insect legs, no wing fragments — just pellets.
Do Subterranean Termites Produce Frass?
No, and this is the most important thing on this page for anyone in Ontario.
Subterranean termites do not leave visible droppings. Their waste is combined with soil and saliva and used to build the mud tubes and gallery linings the colony depends on.
The material they produce is sometimes called carton — a soft, cardboard-like substance that stays inside the structure rather than being ejected. You will not find it in a pile on the floor.
This matters because Ontario has one established termite species: the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes. Drywood termites are not established anywhere in Canada.
So if you are in Toronto and you have found pellets or sawdust-like debris, termites are the least likely explanation. The evidence subterranean termites leave is completely different.

Termite Frass vs Sawdust
Ordinary sawdust is the easiest thing to rule out, and plenty of frass reports turn out to be exactly that.
Sawdust from saws, drills or sanding consists of shavings and fine wood fibre. Under magnification the particles are irregular — curls, slivers and dust rather than uniform capsules.

It has no consistent shape, tends to be lighter in colour than the surrounding wood, and feels soft rather than gritty.
Location helps too. Sawdust appears where work has been done: near a recently installed door, below a drilled shelf bracket, around new trim. Frass appears where nothing has happened at all.
There is also the time test. Sweep the pile away and mark the date. Sawdust does not come back on its own; anything biological does.
Carpenter Ant Frass vs Termite Frass
This is the comparison that matters most in Toronto, because carpenter ants are common across Ontario and genuinely do leave debris piles.
The important distinction is that carpenter ant frass is not droppings at all. Carpenter ants do not eat wood — they excavate it to build nests, and the debris is the material they remove.
That changes its appearance completely. Carpenter ant frass is fibrous and uneven, made up of wood shavings and splinters of varying size rather than uniform pellets.

It also contains things termite frass never does. Insect body parts turn up routinely in carpenter ant debris — legs, wing fragments, dead nestmates and other nest waste pushed out alongside the shavings.
If you see anything recognisably insect in the pile, you are not looking at termite frass. That detail alone resolves most identifications.
The black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus, is the species most often responsible in Ontario homes, and it favours damp or previously water-damaged wood.

Other Things Mistaken for Termite Frass
Two more possibilities come up often enough to be worth ruling out.
Powderpost beetles (family Lyctidae) produce an extremely fine, flour-like powder rather than pellets. It usually stays packed inside their tunnels and sifts out slowly from small exit holes.
Dampwood termites do produce pellets, but theirs are football-shaped and lack the six lengthwise ridges. They are not a structural pest in Ontario homes.

What Frass in a Toronto Home Usually Means
Put the pieces together and the picture for an Ontario homeowner is fairly clear.
A pile of fibrous shavings with insect parts in it points to carpenter ants. A fine powder near small round holes points to wood-boring beetles. Clean shavings near recent work is sawdust.
Uniform six-sided pellets would point to drywood termites — which would be genuinely unusual here, and most often traced to imported furniture rather than an established local population.
None of that means you can rule out termites in your home. It means frass is the wrong evidence to look for.
If termites are your actual concern, check the foundation, basement walls and sill plates for mud tubes, and look for hollow-sounding structural wood. Those are the signs that matter, and the signs of a termite infestation sets them out in order.
Is Termite Frass Dangerous?
Frass itself is not toxic and does not bite, sting or spread disease. It is digested wood.
It can still cause problems in the way any fine organic dust can. People with asthma, dust allergies or existing respiratory sensitivity may react to disturbed frass, and prolonged skin contact occasionally causes irritation.
Wear gloves and a dust mask if you are clearing a significant amount, and avoid dry sweeping, which puts particles into the air.
The real risk is not the frass. It is what the frass indicates — an insect colony actively working inside structural wood, which is a problem that grows quietly for as long as it is ignored.
Does Frass Appear in Winter?
Debris piles slow down in winter but do not necessarily stop.
Carpenter ants become far less active in cold weather, and a colony nesting in an unheated wall may go quiet entirely until spring. Activity inside a heated wall cavity can continue year-round.
Subterranean termites remain active through Ontario winters below the frost line and inside heated basements, but as established, they will not announce it with frass.
A pile that stops appearing in December and returns in April tells you something is nesting in a space that tracks outdoor temperature. That is useful information for a technician.
How to Get Rid of Frass
Clearing frass is straightforward. Resolving what produced it is the part that requires care.
Before you touch anything, photograph the pile and note exactly where it is and the date you found it. This is the single most useful thing you can do.
Then vacuum rather than sweep, to avoid scattering particles. Wipe the surface and leave it clean.
Mark the date and check again in a week. A pile that reappears confirms an active colony; one that does not may have been old debris or the result of past work.
What removing frass does not do is address the insects producing it. The colony sits inside the wood, and surface cleaning has no effect on it whatsoever.
If the pile returns, book a professional inspection rather than guessing. An inspector identifies the species from the debris, the damage pattern and the location, then works out how far the nest extends.
Conclusion
If you are in Toronto and you have found something that looks like sawdust, it is very unlikely to be termites. Ontario's only termite does not leave frass, and the species that does is not established in Canada.
